Our club serves the needs of chess players in the Atherton, Leigh, Tyldesley and Westhougton areas, although we have members from even further afield.
We are a friendly club that meets on Monday evenings (from 7-30 pm) in a private function room at the Atherton Arms, 6 Tyldesley Road, Atherton, Manchester, M46 9DD, England. Players of all standards and abilities (including juniors) are always welcome. If you need directions to the venue then see our Find Us page. If you would like to visit on a club night then let us know a few days in advance through the Guestbook and we will ensure that there is somebody there to greet you and give you a game.
The club enters teams in the Warrington League, Central Lancashire League and NCCU Club Championships, with varying degrees of success! We are affiliated to the Lancashire Chess Association and many members have played for Lancashire's representative teams in recent years.
The club also organises the Atherton Rapidplay tournament, a fun event that takes place in spring. The results of the 2009 Atherton Rapidplay sponsored by SchemingMind.com can be found on our Rapidplay page.
The Club Championship is being held over the summer period. This will take place over five rounds, with three weeks for each round. Each player will have one hour for all moves and the winner will be the player with the best performance against grade. The draw was random for the first round and normal Swiss pairings will be made for subsequent rounds.
